Volunteers: The Heart of Kenesserie Camp
For more than a century, Kenesserie Camp has been a place where young people grow in confidence, form lasting friendships, and discover what they are capable of. Generations of campers have walked the same forest trails, cleaned the same rustic cabins, rang the same bell, and gathered around the same campfires.
Today, Kenesserie Camp remains the only overnight summer camp in Chatham-Kent. That is something our community can take pride in. It also comes with a responsibility we share together.
Small charities like ours do not exist on their own. They are sustained by people who care deeply about what a place like Kenesserie can mean in a child’s life.
Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of organizations like ours.
They are the people who give a few hours of their time to repair a trail, paint a cabin, rake leaves, or prepare a building for the season ahead. They are the neighbours, former campers, parents, and community members who believe that the experiences children have here are worth protecting and passing on.
Because of volunteers, the gates open each spring.
Because of volunteers, young people continue to experience the sense of belonging that camp provides.
And because of volunteers, Kenesserie Camp remains part of the story of Chatham-Kent.
Preparing for the 2026 Season
On April 18, 2026, we will gather at Kenesserie Camp for our annual Camp Opening Day. This is the day when volunteers come together to prepare the property for the season ahead.
There is a lot to do as we wake the camp up after winter. Cabins need to be opened and cleaned. Trails need attention. Outdoor spaces need a little care so they are ready to welcome the first groups of the season.
We are especially excited about what lies ahead this year. Several May and June school groups have already been confirmed, along with weekend rental groups and even an onsite wedding. Our summer camp season is also seeing strong registrations, and 2026 is shaping up to be a very successful year.
Before all of that can happen, though, we need helping hands.
A Simple Way to Help
If you have ever thought about giving back to your community, this is a wonderful place to start. You do not need special skills or previous experience. Just bring a willingness to lend a hand and spend a few hours helping prepare a place that means so much to so many families.

Keeping Camp Strong for the Next Generation
Places like Kenesserie Camp survive because communities choose to keep them alive.
